Why It’s Important to Know the Age of Your Roof

When calling a roofer to discuss a job that you need done, one of the first things that they will ask you about is the age of your roof. This information is important because it gives them a general idea of your roof’s health and condition, so they know which measures need to be taken and the best way to prepare for the work.

Of course, the roofer will still need to personally inspect your roofing to assess its current condition and confirm its age. Read on as roof repair expert Earl W. Johnston Roofing, LLC shares more below.

Ask Previous Homeowners

You can simply ask the previous owners of your home how old the roof is. They should be able to provide you with records of your roof’s installation, repairs and maintenance, if they didn’t do so already.

Look for the Building Permit

If the previous owner doesn’t know when the roof was installed, you can try contacting your local county. If they require building permits for roofing projects, you can request a copy of the permit that was submitted for your roof. This document will include the date when the roof was installed.

Check the Receipt From the Contractor

Another option is to find the receipt provided by the company that installed the roof. If the previous owner no longer has the receipt, you can at least ask for the name of the contractor that performed the installation. Then, contact the company and request the information you need. Roofing companies normally keep a record of all the roofs they’ve worked on.

Hire a Roofing Company or Home Inspector

If all else fails, you can enlist the services of a home inspector or roofing company to examine your roof and determine its age. Make sure to hire qualified and experienced professionals so that you can get a reliable and accurate assessment of your roofing system.
