Signs Your Asphalt Shingle Roof Is Correctly Installed

Your home deserves the best protection, and having an asphalt shingle roof that has been installed up to standards plays a significant role in it. In this blog post, one of the trusted residential roofing experts in the local area, Earl W. Johnston Roofing, highlights a few signs that an asphalt shingle roof is correctly installed.

Correct Shingle Installation

Each shingle must be appropriately nailed into the designated nail strip consisting of four nails. Six nails are often required when the roofing is pyramid-shaped or has steep slopes. Moreover, the nails should not be overdriven and must not break the self-seal adhesive. The shingles should also be laid from the bottom up in straight, neat lines.

Adequate Ventilation

A roof that “breathes” is vital, as it not only enhances your home’s energy efficiency but also extends the lifespan of your asphalt shingle roof. Without adequate intake and exhaust vents, your roof may become susceptible to severe damage, such as wood rot and mold growth due to heat and moisture buildup inside the attic.

Seamless Flashing Installation

Flashing is usually placed around roof features like the chimney, valley, and roof penetrations to prevent water intrusion on or near these areas. Proper installation means it is integrated seamlessly within the shingles and is laid flat to ensure no water enters through.

Correct Underlayment Installation

Underlayment serves as a second line of defense if water penetrates the shingles. It should be installed correctly over the roof deck and under the shingles.

Properly Finished and Sealed Edges

A well-installed asphalt shingle roof should have clean, straight, and properly sealed drip edges. These prevent water from getting underneath the shingles and finding its way into your home’s interior.

Proper Alignment on All Joints

Shingles should match up cleanly on all intersections, and the joints in one course should be offset from the joints in the course below it. The corners should be aligned, and any pattern should flow naturally from one part of the roof to another.

Uniform Appearance

A properly installed asphalt shingle roof should have a uniform look. There should be no humps, indentation, or color mismatch. The shingles must lay flat against the roof deck, and there shouldn’t be any bulges or rippling.
