Factors That Can Affect Asphalt Shingle Weathering

Weathering refers to the long-term effects of the elements on the roof. While weathered shingles are not necessarily damaged, over time, weathering will gradually lead to the failure of asphalt shingles. How well an asphalt shingle roof weathers will depend on a number of factors. A shingle and tile roofing expert lists them below.

  • Shingle Quality: If your roof has low-quality shingles installed on it, expect it to deteriorate faster than a roof with high-quality shingles. Quality can vary among manufacturers, so make sure to find a roofing company that only partners with reputable shingles manufacturers.
  • Thermal Cycling: Climates with severe temperature swings can shorten the lifespans of roofing systems because they cause frequent contraction and expansion.
  • Structure Orientation: An asphalt shingle roof with a south-facing slope can also experience a shorter service life due to the increased thermal cycling and exposure to ultraviolet light. Some segments of the roofing structure are more susceptible to prevailing winds than others.
  • Elevation: Homes at higher elevations are exposed to increased levels of ultraviolet radiation. This causes damage to most roof coverings, including asphalt shingles.
  • Roof Ventilation: Proper ventilation allows for cool, fresh air to enter and warm, moist air to escape the roof. If the ventilation in the roof is inadequate, it will fail to keep the asphalt shingles cool, leading to premature deterioration. Also, shingle surfaces may lose volatiles quickly, which causes asphalt to dry, shrink and crack.
