Why Shouldn’t You Hire an Out-of-Town Roofer?

Since quality roofing work is a significant investment, you need to hire a reputable roofing contractor for the job. With so many different roofing companies out there, it may be overwhelming to look for the right team that fits your needs. Not only that, but there are also plenty of dishonest and sleazy roofers who take advantage of unsuspecting homeowners. These “storm chasers”, as they are called, travel from town to town that has been recently affected by a weather event and offer cheap, low-quality work.

As such, it’s best to hire a local roofer for your needs. Here’s why it isn’t a good idea to hire a cheaper, out-of-town counterpart.

The Risks of Hiring a Cheap Roofer From Out of Town

Some out-of-town roofers offer to get the job done quickly. However, “fast” does not always mean “good”. Here are a few risks you need to know should you decide to hire a roofer from out of town:

  • Poor roofing work: Out-of-town roofing contractors tend to offer lower prices, making them quite appealing to most homeowners. However, your local contractors use high-quality and latest materials while their out-of-town counterparts may use cheap materials that result in poor roofing work. After only a few years, you may have to repair or replace your roof again.
  • Improper insurance: The roofing contractor you hire for repair or replacement should have the right credentials and insurance. Unfortunately, roofers from out of town tend to have improper insurance or even none at all. If an accident occurs on your property, you will be legally responsible for the costs.
  • Questionable sales tactics: If a roofer from out of town shows up unannounced on your doorstep for a consultation and starts offering exceptionally low prices or special deals, take caution. They are probably trying to get you to sign a contract on the spot. Keep in mind that most people only replace their roofs once or twice in their lifetime, so be sure to avoid falling victim to these questionable sales tactics.

Why It’s Best to Hire a Local Roofing Contractor

If you need roofing work, it’s best to hire a local roofer. Keep in mind that building codes vary from town to town. A local contractor is going to be much more familiar with them, making sure your roof is compliant with any guidelines set by your local government. These roofers will also have an easier time getting permits approved as well.

Local roofing contractors have a physical office in your area. Thus, should a conflict arise during the roofing project, you also won’t have a difficult time tracking them down. In addition to that, you can also check their references thoroughly.
