4 Factors to Consider Before Installing a Tile Roof

Tile roofing is one of the longest-lasting roofing materials. In fact, many ancient structures still have their tile roofs intact. Not all tile roofs are the same, however. Unlike today’s shingle roofs, manufacturers rarely sell tile roofs as complete systems, so it’s important to consider the following:

  1. Roof Pitch: Roof tiles need to be installed on roof decks with least 4/12 pitch. This means you need to have a professional check your existing roof deck to ensure it has the minimum required pitch. If it doesn’t, you’ll need to invest in a new roof deck before installing tile roofing. Additionally, tiles are much heavier than asphalt shingles, so factor in roof reinforcements if getting a new roof deck is not an option.
  2. Material: Clay was traditionally the only option for tile roofing. Many factors affect quality, like the clay source and baking method, with inferior tiles being prone to frost damage. When sourcing the tiles yourself, know where the tiles are manufactured or at least confirm that they’re designed for your local climate. Better yet, just hire a local roofing contractor who offers tile roofing services. At Earl W. Johnston Roofing, LLC, we offer materials like concrete tiles that are more suitable for Florida’s warm climate.
  3. Underlayment: Modern roofing systems have provisions like a waterproofing membrane or underlayment in case windblown rain gets under the main roofing. Tile roofing has the same requirements, which is why you should make sure that the roofing contractor will provide appropriate underlayment material for your tile roof.
  4. Gutters: Why not invest in long-lasting gutters as well? Tile roofs look great with both modern and traditional gutter designs. Seamless gutters made from stainless steel are gaining popularity because of the low-maintenance benefits and clean aesthetics they provide. Alternatively, consider heavy-gauge copper gutters: they don’t corrode and look even better as they age thanks to their natural patina.
