3 Signs of a Poorly Installed Roof

Tackling home improvement isn’t always a smooth-sailing endeavor, especially when it comes to major projects like roof installations. There’s always the possibility of hiring a less experienced roofer for the job, resulting in a roofing system that isn’t up to par with manufacturer standards and local building codes.

Today, we share the three of the common signs of a poorly installed roof.

1. Stains on your shingles: If you see black stains on your roof, it might be due to water leaks. A closer inspection can help you determine the extent of the leak. However, it’s best for you to check your attic for stains instead of climbing up to your roof. There are some leaks that can be fixed without replacing the entire roof, but make sure that it is addressed early.

2. Mismatching: Usually, your roof should wear out evenly, even if one side gets most of the brunt of the weather elements. However, the roofer might have installed high-quality materials only on one side, leaving the other side with the same material but of a lesser quality. If this is the case for your roof, it’s a sign that the contractor cut corners, resulting in a structure that can’t last longer than its expected lifespan.

3. A missing drip edge: The roof’s drip edge is a metal sheet that protects the board under the edge of your roof from water damage. Without this, expect signs of water damage to be visible not only your roof, but also on the other parts of your home. Here are some of the types of damage that may occur as a result of a missing drip edge:

  • Flooded basement
  • Mold
  • Rot
  • Soil erosion along the foundation
  • Stains

When you notice any of these problems, make sure to contact your local roofing contractor before they get worse.
